Canadian Immigration; 2021 and beyond

On October 30, 2020, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) released details on the Government of Canada’s Immigration Levels Plan for 2021-2023.

Canada aims to welcome:

  • Year 2021: 401,000 new immigrants (permanent residents)
  • Year 2022: 411,000 new immigrants (permanent residents)
  • Year 2023: 421,000 new immigrants (permanent residents)

Canada has various programs to welcome new immigrants to Canada. Some of them are listed below:

In addition to permanently immigrating to Canada, one can also come to Canada to complete higher education and also benefit from a pathway for students to obtain permanent residence after successfully completing their studies in Canada. Click here to find out how you can Study In Canada.

Canada has embarked on various new programs to be able to achieve its targeted immigration levels. Some of the most recent programs were:

  • Temporary public policies: Temporary resident to permanent resident pathway (for international graduates and essential workers) – a total of 90,000 applications can be accepted through this program.
  •  In February 2021, there was an Express Entry draw where 75,000 candidates were invited to apply to permanent residence under the Canadian Experience Class

Due to COVID-19 IRCC has been under a tremendous transformation effort, where IRCC is gradually moving all paper-based application intakes to make them fully electronic. Citizenship ceremonies along with interviews are already happening on zoom. Applications for citizenship and family sponsorships, which were previously paper-based have also now moved to a complete electronic filing system.

Time will only tell whether Canada can meet or exceed its immigration targets in the years to come.
